the winding gear

The giant wheels and original winding gear that hauled the cable cars up the incline have been restored to working order and is one of only a few examples of its type left in the world.

Previously steam powered, the winding gear was electrified in 1933.

restored grip cars

On display are two of the three original cable car system's grip cars. One of these has been restored to its original 1905 condition and the other to a 1970s appearance - exactly how it was when it was retired.

Cable Car Museum refurbishment

The museum recently removed the trailer from Grip Car 1 to undertake a two stage development of the Winding House. While off-site at the Museums Wellington Collections Store it will undergo a conservation assesment and any refurbishment as required.

Grip Car 1, however, is still on display at the museum.
