Visit Wellington's oldest original cottage -
the best example of its type in New Zealand

Built by William Wallis as a home for his family in 1858, this was a time when candles were made from tallow and the nails used to build the Cottage were imported.

The cottage typifies the elegant late-Georgian style of houses built in Wellington through to 1870. The heritage garden is a thriving example of cottage style planting, with a mix of flowers, vegetables, herbs and fruit trees.

Information as well as enjoyment...

The garden at the cottage is modeled on what it would have been like when the cottage was built. There is now some new interpretation to help visitors understand the importance of gardens to European settlers and to identify some of the plants and their uses.

Therefore the garden will now be open during daylight hours - even when the Cottage itself is closed!.
